“How come you never go out on dates, dude?” Jason asks as he reaches up into the cupboard to get a cup, his feet up on tip toes to grasp at the cheap plastic cup at the back of the shelf. He grins with his success when he sets the cup on the counter and proceeds to pour the chocolate milk.

Jensen shakes his head at the sight of the glass; decorations featuring an old Disney character were slowly being washed away after far too much use. He was fairly certain all of Jason’s drink ware was from some sort of fast food promotion.

Typical Jason, cheapskate when it comes to the necessities.

“Dude? Zone out much?” Jason asks as he wipes away the last bit of the milk from his lip.

“Huh? What’d you say?” Jensen says, looking up to see Jason staring at him, eyes full of questions.

He rolls his eyes with a shake of his head and proceeds to restate his question, “I said, how come you never go out on dates. I mean, you came out like six months ago and I haven’t seen you go on one date with a guy, let alone even talk about a guy. You know I am cool with it all don’t you? The gay thing? It’s all good; I can deal with you talking about other men cus, ya know, I am totally secure with my sexuality.”

“Good to know,“ Jensen sighs and put his fist under his chin as he sits down at their shared kitchen table. “I do go on dates, just not recently.”

“Oh really? I wanna know when and who.” Jason says as his arms fold across his chest; eyebrow rising skeptically.

“Ummm…” Jensen racks his brain to find an answer, only to realize that the last true date he had was with Danneel about a month before he came out.

“It’s what I thought dude. Do you even look at other guys?”

“Of course I look at guys, why wouldn’t I? There was this guy that showed up over at Chad’s house last night. God was he hot, really tall, kinda longer hair, had these cute little moles. Mmmm!” Jensen says, biting his lip with a shake of his head.

“He gay? Did you get his name?” Jason says, his interest was now piqued as he prods Jensen with circling wave of his hand.

“You know I’m not sure. I don’t exactly have the most finely tuned gaydar, but boy I hope so! Think Chad said his name was Jared Padananski Pada… something foreign sounding.”

Jason gets a sly gleam in his eye. He grabs Jensen’s cell from off of the table and runs back to his room with a booming slam of the door. Jensen is up off his feet and pounding frantically at the now locked door.

“Jason, give me back my phone! This isn’t funny. You’d better not be calling Chad; I swear if you are I’m gonna kill you slowly!” Jensen says, screaming through the door, placing his ear tight against the wood, trying to hear anything from the other side.

The door opens, almost sending Jensen into Jason’s shoulder. Jason hands him the phone, looking entirely too smug.
“What did you do?” Jensen asks, almost dreading his answer.

“You, Mr. Ackles have your first real gay date with one, Jared Padalecki, tomorrow night. He will be picking you up here promptly at seven.”

“He what?” Jensen says, his eyes wide with disbelief as the realization seeps in.

“You talked to Chad? What did he say? Did you tell him what I said? Did he say anything about him saying anything about me? I mean we barely met and it was for like a split second, but I kinda felt this, like, connection and what if he is gay; I mean he could totally be the one. What if we hit it off and get swept up in this whole , like, whirlwind romance thing, and we jet off to Vegas or somewhere and I come back married and then we adopt and – ”

“Whoa! Hold up there Speedy!” Jason says, interrupting Jensen’s abrupt disintegration into giddy schoolgirl. “Chad said he is gay and he thought you were adorable. I mentioned maybe setting you two up and Chad agreed. Apparently Jared was right there so he asked and he said yes, end of discussion. So don’t go all picking out china patterns on me just yet. Jason says taken aback by Jensen’s abrupt disintegration into giddy school girl. How about we start with getting the place cleaned up for tomorrow, wouldn’t want him to think you are a slob or anything.”

Jensen’s head whipped around to glare at him. With a punch to the shoulder, Jensen’s freckles flared deep against his now flushed skin.

“All this crap is yours! And I think I need to kill you, like, right now.”

Jason yelps and runs past him into the cluttered living room, as Jensen tore after him.

Jensen rushes in through the door to the apartment, dropping his back pack next to the couch and kicks off his shoes. His shirt is halfway over his head when Jason emerges from the kitchen a bowl of cereal in his hand.

“Jen, man, he is gonna be here in like forty minutes. You’re kinda pushing it,” he says around a mouth fully of Lucky Charms.

“I know, I know, but Professor Kripke wanted to talk to me about my paper and wow that man can talk!” Jensen says as he throws his shirt at Jason’s face and charges for the bathroom.

Jason peels the tee shirt off his face and tosses it to the couch as Jensen shuts the door and twists the knob, causing the shower head to sputter to life. He rips off his pants and underwear without unbuttoning and jumps in. With a quick jerk to the curtain, he lets the lukewarm wash over him as he curses the inferiority of their water heater. He douses the bath sponge with body wash and suds himself in all reachable places, double scrubbing in potentially important ones. After rinsing, he grabs the bottle of shampoo and works it into his short hair, only to realize he hasn’t grabbed a towel. He reaches out of the side of the shower curtain to blindly feel for one, but comes up empty handed. He leans down to crack one eye opened as sees the black cotton sticking out of the rack and yanks at it. Just as he loops the towel over the rod, a foamy trickle of shampoo drips down his face and into his eye.

“Son of a bitch!” he screams in pain, trying to scrape away the suds as his foot stomps at the porcelain beneath him.

“Ya okay in there, buddy?” he barely makes out though the rush of water.

“I’m fine!” Jensen shouts back out and ducks under the stream to wash away the evil shampoo.

Jensen finishes his shower and shaving without further incident. With a quick splash of water to wash away the cream, he looks at himself in the mirror and notices the reddening of his left eye.

“No, no, no, no, no! This can’t be happening to me, not right now,” he says pouting. With a sigh, he wraps the towel around his waist and opens the bathroom door to an anxious Jason.

“Ten minutes, Jensen. He’s gonna be here in… dude, what did you do to your eye?” he asks when he looks up from his watch.

“Shut up,” Jensen snaps back at him and heads into his own room to get dressed. He’s just pulling up his khaki shorts when the doorbell rings. Grabbing the laid out shirt and fumbling with the buttons, he slips into his sandals. A quick grab for his wallet and he opens the door.

“Holy crap, you’re tall!” Jason spits out.

Jensen rounds the corner to see Jason staring up at the boy in the doorway. The young man chuckles and hands his hand out to shake Jason’s hand.

“Jared,” he says, his dimples digging deep into his cheeks and a flash of white beaming from behind his lips. His eyes shoot over to Jensen, whose heart starts to flutter as he imagines running his hands through those thick chestnut strands of hair. Jensen tries to hide his nervousness by biting deep into his inside cheek, and the fact that his legs are about to buckle beneath him as Jared approaches. He leans his shoulder against the wall to keep himself from falling over.

“You’re Jensen, right? We kind of met the other night,” Jared says, once Jason issues him inside with a backwards turn of the hand.

“Oh my God, what happened to your eye?” Jared says pointing to his own eye as he cranes his neck forward to inspect the now very self-conscious Jensen.

Jensen’s hand smacks over his now bloodshot source of embarrassment, pouting as he whines, “I had a slight shampoo malfunction.”

“Well you still look mighty adorable.” Jared says, scratching his chin and winking “You ready to go?” he asks, thumb motioning towards the door.”

Jensen smiles. He withdraws his hand from his eye and follows closely behind him, eager to get this night to turn out better than it started. Jared leads him silently down the stairway and outside to a rust-riddled red Ford truck from the 50’s.

“Sorry, it isn’t much to look at. I’ve been working on repairing her, but it’s going slower than expected.” Jared says, walking to the passenger side and opening the door with a loud scraping of metal. Jensen shyly lifts the corners of his mouth and climbs into the refinished and immaculate interior of the truck.

Jared shuts the door behind him and leans down to rest his elbows on the open windowed door frame before he continues, “Can you tell what I did first?”

“Wow! You did all this? It’s amazing, really.” he exclaims as he looks over to Jared’s grinning face.

“Thank ya kindly sir.” Jared says with a tip to an imaginary cowboy hat. He bounds around the truck and climbs in with a protesting creak from the vehicle. After a few attempts to start it, the truck roars to life with a belch of thick black smoke exploding from the tail pipe.

About a half hour later, Jared pulls into a gas station parking lot.

“Come on in,” Jared says as he pats his knee and nods his head towards the store. Jensen raises an eyebrow in confusion, still not exactly sure what their date is going to be. He fights with the door handle until he succeeds in opening it and follows Jared inside directly to the snack foods. Jared starts loading his arm full of candy and snacks and then heads to the cooler. After asking Jensen his beverage choice, he grabs two large bottles and slams the glass door closed with his foot. Dumping his horde of treats on the counter he pays the total and beams a playful grin back at Jensen as the clerk fills the sack.

Jared opens the door for Jensen again and hands him the bag to set on the bench seat in between them. He climbs in and the beast of a vehicle growls angrily as he throws it into gear.

“You gonna tell me where you’re taking me? Or are you just planning on abducting me and having your way with me?” Jensen says, trying to break his uncharacteristic shyness.

Something about this boy is making him feel like a twelve year old girl at a Jonas Brother’s meet and greet. His heart still pounding in his chest every time he looks at him, but he’s afraid he’ll drool if he opens his mouth to speak.

Jared’s head falls back as he laughs, “Damn, you caught me. I was gonna take you to a secluded cabin in the woods and make you my personal sex slave but I forgot the rope.”

Jensen shakes his head, but realizes he still never answered the question. Turns out though, he doesn’t have long to wait as the truck pulls up to an old drive-in movie theater that Jensen never knew existed. The place is empty, save for one other car but Jared drives in and parks at the perfect distance from the screen. Jensen looks around at the weeds, rocks, and ancient looking building in the center of the forest of speaker boxes.

“Relax, my parents own the place. Doesn’t get much use anymore, but we still have some movies inside.” Jared says, teasing as his hand rifles through the bag and pulls out a box of microwaveable popcorn. “Come on in, there’s someone I want you to meet.”

The two walk through a whirlwind of dust as they head into an old concession stand. A cheery young girl with straight dark hair comes running out to greet them.

“Is this him, it isn’t the guy you have been talking nonstop about for like days. Hi I’m Megan.” The tall girl says as she shoots out an excited hand to Jensen.

“Jensen, this is my sister. Megan, this is Jensen. Behave,” he says with a brotherly warning on the last word.

“She has graciously offered to run the projector for us. She chose the movie, but she won’t tell me which one it is, so it’ll be a surprise.” He says to Jensen before he turns his attention back to his sister, “It better be a good one too, or I am gonna let all the air out of your tires.”

Megan blows off her brother and focuses on Jensen, “So why did you ask this big bore out anyway? I totally would have said yes, if you’d asked me.”

“Uh, I didn’t and umm…” Jensen smiles, drawing his hands up to his chest to mime breasts making Megan laugh. Jared excuses himself to the back room, leaving his date and sister alone as he pops the popcorn. Jensen discovers all sorts of trivial knowledge from Jared’s sister. The Ackles and Padalecki clans mirror each other, two sons, one daughter, Jared and Jensen being the middle children, and all of them have a corresponding first initial. Jared is goofy and athletic but has a secret affinity for chick flicks and a not- so-secret love of candy. Megan is just about to tell him an ’ultra embarrassing’ fact about Jared, when he breaks them up, heaping bucket of popcorn in tow.

They make it back to the truck just as the sun goes down. Jared adjusts the old metal speaker in his window and they scoot closer to each other just as the beginning credits flicker across the massive screen.

The rumbling Ford truck dies just as loud as it comes to life as Jared parks outside Jensen’s apartment. The two stagger up the staircase and Jensen digs deep into his pocket for his keys.

“So I had a really fun night tonight. Thanks,” he says as he flips through his keys to the right one.

“Me too,” Jared agrees. “Wanna do it again tomorrow? I mean, you don’t have to -”

“God yes,” Jensen almost screams and spins around to face him. Jared laughs at his exuberance and moves in for a quick kiss on the lips.

“Awesome. I will call you in the morning then. Good night.”

Jensen is still staring at the door across the hallway when the tell-tale belch of a motor rumbles outside. He’s not sure but he swears he hears a “Yee- haw” shouted into the night. The second the door closes behind him, Jensen crumples to the floor; back propped against the door as his head spins with thoughts of Jared and tomorrow night’s kiss.
