friday the thirteenth

So I realized today that I hadn't seen the remake(re-imagining)of Friday the 13th in a while. This was my third time seeing it, I think, and I have to say, it's a lot better than people give it credit for. Sure the acting isn't that great, there are definite plot-holes, there is an obscene amount of boobage (even for F13), and various other issues but overall it was a pretty good horror flick. Did I mention it has Jared?

FYI maybe some spoilers...

Now, I will say I have seen the original movies countless times over the years, kind of why I refused to go to scout camp actually, and this movie is on par or above the majority of the series. I honestly do not understand the flack this movie gets.

Fan-boys and girls that hated this movie, cite the 'wooden' acting and the story as their main issues. Like I said the acting isn't great but when compared to, say Jason Takes Manhattan, this is freaking Shakespeare. When it comes to the story how is this any worse than A New Beginning or Jason Goes To Hell? I agree that Jason taking a prisoner for 6 weeks is a bit far-fetched, though, and don't mess with his weed! I loved the entire opening sequence, loved the first round of pre-title card slashings, and again JARED! Finally a remake that he doesn't die in (still pissed at House of Wax and Flight of the Phoenix).

To me the whole trend of re-imagining horror classics is perfectly fine. I loved Texas Chainsaw Massacre, enough to rush out and by the original. Hated that by the way, didn't scary me or gross me out, just made me feel uncomfortable and wished it would end.

I am a huge A Nightmare of Elm Street fan, and while the original is my favorite horror film of all time, I really liked what they did with that one too! I loved that they definitively stated whether or not Freddy was a molester. There was way to much hinting and ambiguity in the original series for my taste. This version gave him a true cause for targeting the children, not just their parents. Sure, his make up was weird and the acting wasn't stellar (miss Heather Langenkamp as Nancy) but overall the only issue I had with it was the glove back history. Where as the originals didn't specify the molester issue, this movie ignores the murder issue. His weapon of choice was his homemade set of claws, the opening of the original is an homage to this. In the remake he uses it only in dream sequences and they find the materials near the end, WTF?

So What do y'all think of them? Are there any other horror movies that you think need updated? Any that need to be left alone (looking at you The Exorcist)?
