Date: 2014-02-21 10:09 pm (UTC)THIS! YOU! Awesomesauce. Your chibi John is cool from the top of his black1 curly hair to the bottom of his defiant stance. Also: SIDEBURNS and THE RING, I can't. I just can't. <3<3<3<3)
The animation is magical: the evil eyebrows, the mesmerizing yellow eyes, that little smirk and then the fucking smoke. Djeebus (I'm holding back online, but imagine me cursing out loud in real life from utter joy;)
You are amazing; You took that little prompt and ran with it. I'm thrilled I could inspire you to take your chibi-designs even further. This really blew me away.
Technical question: did you make the gif in CS6 as well? It looks so sharp and marvelous (and perfect) - I work in CS2 and Image Ready but never get the animation this flawless.
*chinhands*
1Oh, I see the hints of gray in there, I do, *happy sigh*

Date: 2014-02-21 11:04 pm (UTC)As for the process, yes, I did the animation in CS6- in fact the only part that I didn't do in CS6 was the Inking. I originally inked it in PS because the lines tend to look a bit more organic than they do in SAI, but then decided I wanted a cleaner look so SAI it was.
TL;DR warning
Back to the animation... without getting into too much pretentious tutorial speak, I made the non moving base ink on one layer (then a group for colors/shades), then each individual face (again with group folder for colors and shades.) When I had all the colors done it was a matter of making a PNG file for each frame by turning on/off layer groups. **In the past I did the animation directly in the file with all the shades etc, but the Timeline Tool is VERY persnickety and has a habit of turning off layers which you have to double check every single frame, which tends to mean you will get like disappearing eyebrows mid GIF.-- it also makes the file bigger, I think.** ANYWHO, there are like a dozen individual PNG frames that I saved and then imported into a new PS doc. From there it is just a matter of opening the timeline tool, assigning each PNG to a frame, arranging them in the order you want (including copies of previous frames where you need them) and then playing with the times. VIOLA!
So for this one my frames look like this:
Fully open eyed John--> half open eyed John--> closed eye John (you want the blink faster going down than coming back up)--> then reverse that and repeat--> half open eyed Azazel--> fully open eyed Azazel--> half open eyed Azazel--> open mouthed Azazel--> wider open mouthed Azazel--> 1st smoke --> 2nd smoke--> 3rd smoke--> 4th smoke--> 5th smoke (adding one on top of the other, all set to no delay so it looks like it's billowing)--> 3rd smoke--> 1st smoke (set slightly slower)--> wider open mouthed Azazel--> open mouthed Azazel--> closed eye John--> half open eyed John.... set that to infinite play and it seamlessly goes back into the first frame on infinite loop, HUZZAH!
PHEW! It sounds like a lot of work, but it took me far longer to type that than it did to actually do all of that. One day I will make an official tutorial... :P
I'm thrilled you enjoyed it! :D

Date: 2014-02-22 06:24 am (UTC)Love his stance, his scruff, and how you hinted at the gray in his hair. Oh, and the demon smoking-out is awesome!
