Okay, so I know most of you don't really follow comic books, or at least ones that don't have Avengers in the title but bear with me. Ever since I was a wee little kid and I witnessed the Saturday morning masterpiece known as Spider-man and His Amazing Friends, I have been a fan of Iceman aka Bobby Drake. In fact he is my absolute favorite superhero! He is the reason I started reading X-men.
Although I rarely read comics anymore (way too freaking expensive to do nowadays) I do check in every once in a while. About six months ago, something remarkable and extremely confusing happened. I'm not going to explain everything, but here's the gist: Cyclops gained the power of the Phoenix, went a little off the rails and killed Xavier. Beast thought it would be a good idea to bring younger versions of the original X-men (himself included) into the present to hopefully reignite Cyclops humanity (or something to that effect,) so now we have older Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman-- Jean is still currently dead, or rather living in the White Hot Room DON'T ASK! -- along with younger Cyclops, Beast, Angel, Iceman, and Jean Grey.
Confused yet? IT GETSWORSE BETTER!
So Bobby has always been kind of a womanizer type character, but never been too lucky in the lady love department. But being adorable he has drawn the eye of Northstar (not that he was aware of it.) If you Don't know Northstar, he would be the first, or at least the most notable, major superhero to come out as gay. Anyway, fast forward a few years... young Bobby is being a little to overtly pervy towards one of his female teachers which annoys Jean enough that she finally decides to confront young Bobby about something: namely his sexuality. Jean doesn't intentionally dig for the info, but being a psychic she knows that Bobby is overcompensating for being gay.
Does anyone see an issue here? Young Bobby is gay. Old Bobby is straight. WHAT THE FUCK? It took MONTHS for this to actually be addressed but finally last month the truth came out, or rather Bobby did. BOTH OF THEM. Turns out Bobby (old one, not young) couldn't bear to be part of yet another hated/ostracized group (he's a mutant, he's Jewish, and gay) so he buried his sexuality and played it straight since, oh, 1963 or in Marvel continuity about ten years (Cuz Math!) Both Bobby's finally agree on one thing: Angel is hot! (though older or younger or both IDEK, CUZ HOLY FUCK!) So yeah, one of the original X-men and MY FAVORITE FUCKING SUPERHERO came out of the closet!!! So, um, yeah Here, have two versions of Mr. Robert Drake.
