Everything Will Be Alright

“Hey Tom, he's had a pretty rough morning today. It might be best to leave him be.” Shondra said sincerely.

“But he's expecting me? Can I at least pop in and say hi and see how he's doing?” the green eyes tried to win her over.

“Oh I guess it won't hurt.” she said with a laugh and went about filling out her chart.

“Thanks.”

Tom walked down the hallway and opened the door very slowly as to not make any disturb anyone. Jensen lay sleeping peacefully on the bed, his chest raising the blanket ever so slightly with each breath. Tom peeked back around to see the nurse still preoccupied. He slipped in and closed the door behind him. Pulling the chair closer he sat for a second before placing his hand over one of the wrinkled ones on the bed. He sat there for a few moments and then reached down and grabbed the latest novel. He sat back and began to read in a soft whisper.

“Dude come on?” Mike whined

“I have plans, I'm sorry... maybe some other time.” Tom gathered up his books and pen off the table as his fellow students hurried out the door.

“Plans? You are gonna go read to some old fuck. Come on Tommy?”

“He's not an old fuck and I'm sorry if I wanna spend my Friday night doing something meaningful. Jaime doesn't have a problem with it, she thinks its kind of sweet actually.”

“That's because she's your chic! Besides tonight can be meaningful...”

“I don't think anyone's life is going to be drastically altered by licking off tequila from some boozed up sorority girl's navel.” Tom said trying to end the conversation.

“Mine might!' Mike chided, popping a fake punch into the taller boy's arm.

“You know what I mean.”

“Fine! I give! Go spend time with Grandpa Moses. Your loss dude.” Mike threw his hands up in frustration and stormed out of the classroom. Tom shoved in his notebook, tossed the bag over his shoulder, and made for the door.

“Tom, I appreciate the company, I do, but shouldn't a young man like yourself have something better to do on a Friday night than sit with some old fogy like me? Don't you have any other friends? What about that girlfriend of yours?”

“Of course I have friends... They're all going out to some big kegger at one of the frats tonight. Jaime's going with 'em. Not really my kind of thing though. I like it here, sitting here with you. So you aren't going to be scaring me off that easy ol' man!” Tom said through a wide smile.

“You are a very special young man, Thomas.”

“Why thank you Jensen.” Tom said with a blush.

“So what's it to be tonight? Checkers? Book? You pick son.”

“Actually I was hoping to hear more about you.”

“What do you want to know?” Jensen leaned forward in his wheelchair.

“Anything.. I dunno.”

Jensen sat there trying to think of something to say but wasn't coming up with anything.

Tom decided to help by grabbing a picture of the shelf. “How about this one.” He handed Jensen a school picture. The freckles across the bridge of the nose were a dead giveaway as to who it was. “You were quite the stud back in the day weren't you?”

“I did alright with the ladies, nothing like Jared though. That boy had a girl on his arm everyday and more waiting in line.”

~~~
Jensen walked through the rows of lockers in a daze. Bumping into people, he ignored their protests on his absent minded journey. He was finally stopped by a large hand grabbing his shoulder.
“Hey! Earth to Jensen.”
“Huh? What? Jared? Where'd you come from?”
“I've been trying to get your attention, for like the last five minutes! What's up?” Jared followed side by side as the two continued walking.
“Nothing.” Jensen said lowering his eyes just barely.
“Come on man, it's me! You know you can tell me anything... spill it!”
“It's just that uh.. I think Amy just asked me out to the dance.”
Jared came to a complete halt and through both hands on Jensen's shoulders. “Amy? As in Amy Gumenick? Seriously? Man, that's awesome!”
“Yeah? Don't you think, you know, she's a bit out of my league? Besides that, isn't it kinda of weird, I mean a girl asking a guy to a dance.”
“Okay first of all... what century are you living in? Second it's a girl's choice dance anyway. And lastly you aren't exactly the ugliest guy in school. Girls would kill to go out with you, if you would just pay attention.”
“Yeah right, good one Jay.” Jensen turned to his locker and started twirling the dial. “I don't know.. I think I'm just gonna tell her thanks but no thanks.'
“Like hell you are! You're going Jen. If I have to drag you there myself!” Jared declared as he quickly started jogging down the hall.
“Where are you going?” Jensen called after the moppy haired boy.
“Gotta go tell Traci we're doubling!” He said as he continued his jog, now backwards. “Catch up with you later!” he waved and turned around just in time to miss Mr. Morgan.
___
Jensen tapped his foot nervously on the porch. Biting on the corner of his lip, he finally gave into the inevitable. A shaking hand reached in and hovered for a second before pushing the doorbell. He quickly withdrew, as if it had scalded him. Clutching both hands behind his back he began to rock slightly in his dress shoes.
Finally a very stern looking man opened the door. The man eyed Jensen skeptically. “You must be Johnson.”
“Uh Jensen, sir.” he said, trying to keep from squeaking. He shot back out the fidgeting hand and the man latched on in a crushing squeeze.
“What are your intentions with my daughter tonight son?”
“Uh... ummm.” Jensen flustered.
“Oh daddy stop! You're going to scare him.” the petite blond pushed through behind her father. She quickly grabbed the short haired boy's hand and pulled him down the steps.
“Be home by 11 daddy!”
“Good to meet you sir.” Jensen turned back to give a small wave.”
“10:45! Young lady!”
Jared's car came to a screeching stop. He quickly flung open the door and hurried to the other side to let Traci out. Jensen crawled out from behind the driver's seat and looked around at the school. Jared loudly cleared his throat to get the other boy's attention. When Jensen looked over Jared was motioning towards the back passenger door with his head.
“Oh...!” Jensen ran around and lifted the latch. A small hand reached out to grasp his.
“Thank you, kind sir.” she wrapped her arm within his and the four teens walked up to the school doors.
A soft thumping turned to a loud cacophony of music once the gym doors were opened. Jensen and Jared were bombarded with dancing lights as the followed their dates in.
“I gotta use the bathroom.” Jensen rushed away the second the door closed.
“I'll be right back.” Jared kissed the brunette girl lightly on the forehead and took after his best friend, leaving the two girls by themselves.
When he pushed open the door Jensen was splashing his face with water. The boy reached over to dry it off when Jared stepped in back of him. The two looked at each other in the mirror for a few seconds.
“I can't do this, Jay! I can't...”
“Yes you can!” Jared turned him around and placed reassuring hands once again on his shoulders. “You are a great guy and you deserve to be happy. Did you see her? She looks fucking beautiful and she asked you! Out of all the guys at this school, she chose you Jensen.” He egged the boy on.
“Thanks for being here.” Jensen relaxed under the hands.
“Anything for you.” Jared smiled. “Just a sec you have a....” He slowly reached up and plucked the long eyelash from Jensen's cheek. “Got it!” He blew it away and both boys gazed into each others' eyes for a minute too long.
“Jensen quickly took a step back and turned for the door. Just as he was leaning into push it open Jared spoke.
“Hey Jensen...”
“Yeah?” Jensen asked without looking back.
“Go get her, man.”
A smirk escaped over his lips as the music flooded into the open restroom.
___
Jensen ran through the fair grounds. Jared followed behind laughing the entire way.
Jensen finally bent over and gasped for air between his short legs. Jared stopped to his side holding back his childish giggle.
“That was too funny!”
“Nuh uh!” the boy looked up to his friend.
“You shoulda seen your face! It was all like...” Jared quickly stiffened his ten year old body, puckered his lips, and opened his eyes as wide as he could. “Priceless!”
“Oh shut up! How was I to know she was gonna kiss me!”
“Duh!” Jared shot out between his panting. “Jen, you really need to get over that girls have cooties thing!”
“Hey you're the one that told me.” he again lifted up his red flushed face, freckles finally starting to return through the red.
“Yeah, well what can I say... I think Chad was right.”
“Jensen? Where'd you go? Jensen?” the girl's voice floated through the air.
“Oh God, she's back for more!”
“This way!” Jared grabbed his hand and they took off through the tents and booths. Jared quickly flashed his arm band to the toothless ride operator. The man motioned for the two boys to take a seat in the ski lift type contraption. Jensen's feet were pulling off the ground before he realized that they were going up. He started to panic but when his eyes fell upon the red haired girl pouting below he tried to calm himself.
“Woohoo!” Jared screamed and launched his hands up in the air. The seat shook, causing Jensen's panic to return.
“Can you please not do that!”
“Oh relax it's just a ride Jen!”
The ride rose ever higher, the people below getting smaller and smaller. A tall tower approached to their left. The chair bounced around wildly as it pulled by.
“We're gonna die...we're gonna die...we're gonna die...we're gonna die...” Jensen chanted with his eyes snapping closed.
“No we're not! It's perfectly safe!” Jared tried to calm his best friend down.
When that didn't help he reached forward and put his hand over one of the boyish white-knuckled hands grasping the bar in front of them. In his softest voice Jared worked to soothe his friend. “It's okay Jen, we'll be fine, trust me. Everything will be alright.”
Jensen slowly started to open his eyes.
___
Jensen scuffed his bare feet along the cold hardwood flooring. He scratched his flannel covered butt as the doorbell rang again in the dark.
“I'm coming, hold your damn horses!” he bellowed. He drew a fist to stifle a yawn before rubbing his tired eyes. Again the doorbell started relentlessly. “Oh for God's sakes.' he whined as he fidgeted with the locks.
When he opened the door an anxious Jared stood before him.
“Jared? What are you doing here? I thought you were in Vancouver?”
Jared's eyes filled with tears as he threw his head onto Jensen's naked shoulder.
“Hey... hey... what's wrong? Jay?” he lifted up his hand to place it over the back of the tall man's neck.
“I left her...” came through sobs. Salty tears rolled freely down Jensen's back. “...she cheated Jen... and she's pregna..." he choked on another sob.
Jensen pulled the man into the house, slamming the door closed with his foot. The two maneuvered down the dark hallway and into the spare bedroom. Jensen found the light switch, sending blinding light into his unadjusted eyes. Jensen sat Jared on the end of the bed and quickly removed his boots, tossing them in the corner. He stood the man up and walked him to the head of the queen sized bed and threw back the blankets. Jensen managed to coax him to slide his lengthy legs under in and crawled in behind the man. The brown hair fell against Jensen's chest.
“She doesn't even know if it's mine...” he cried full force now. Jensen brought a hand up to the hair and slowly smoothed it out, over and over again.
“I'm so sorry, Jared. It's okay, you're going to be okay. You'll be fine. Everything will be alright....” Jensen continued his gentle stroking until Jared had cried himself to sleep to the thumping beneath the muscled chest. He clung tightly to his most trusted friend in the world.
“What happened?” Tom asked in anticipation.
“Another time Thomas. I'm tired.”
Tom reached down to help the man up and walked him over to his bed.
