WOW, you know you don't post that often when 'just cuz' posts cause you to fret over a subject line for ten minutes... WHAT EVEN?! Anyways... Hi everybody! My name is Nick and I will be your tour guide on this not-so quick little jaunt through Rambling Town.

First things first: I went to go see Avengers: Age of Ultron today... FINALLY!

Okay, getting this out of the way, I did really enjoy the movie, but I'm not going to pretend that it was the greatest movie ever. Most of my issues with it are some of the same issues that most people have taken issue with but I just need to talk it out anyway, so bear with me:

• Nat and Bruce

Where in the world did this come from and why did it need to exist? I don't mean to ship shame or bash, but where was the basis for this relationship? In Iron Man 2 we saw Black Widow flirt a bit with Tony, but it was because her job required her to. In Avengers she had a very strong comrades-in-arms and deeply entwined past history type relationship with Clint. And in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, she had a flirty banter albeit deep 'looking out for you' wing man style relationship with Steve. All of these relationships would have had a basis for becoming more in this movie but instead they shoehorn her into a romantic relationship with a character she only had two notable interactions with... One of which she was trying to recruit him and in a moment of terror, pulled a gun on him. And the second where his alter ego tried to kill her. And now she is so deeply in love with him that she is willing to just take off with him in the middle of a global catastrophe?

So are they going to make Natasha have a 'relationship' vibe with Thor in the next one? SHE DOESN'T NEED THIS OR ANY MAN TO BE A DECENT CHARACTER! I know this is a dangerous and probelmatic train of thought, but that's how I feel that they are making her... which is NOT how her character should be treated! IT IS DEEPLY TROUBLING! UM. See where I'm going with this? Which leads me to:

• Black Widow

I am usually a fan of Joss Whedon's treatment of female characters, hell the man created Buffy, but what in god's name was he thinking here? She just felt off. Yes, she had some pretty damn good kick ass scenes, but was I the only one thinking they were watering her character down and then turning her into a damsel in distress for no apparent reason? Everything about her in this movie, I just could not buy into, save for the flashback. Her characterization in Winter Soldier was perfect, and idk maybe it was repercussions of her flashback, but she felt completely out of character in this. Please bring back the Widow that we know and love for Captain America: Civil War.

One stupid observation: Why the neon lights on her costume? And if you insist on just having color on her costume, why not make them, IDK, red??? Blue lights just... yeah.

• Iron Man

Didn't he pretty much hang up his suit, or rather blow most of them up, at the end of Iron Man 3? Granted, I've only watched it once, but I swear he did. And yet here he is jumping right in and fighting alongside The Avengers with no mention of that. Is this a case of, 'yeah, we didn't like that decision so we are choosing to ignore it,' situations? Cuz it felt like it.

Also, when is Tony just gonna admit he has his self important head up his ass? Probably never, which is actually a decent setup for Civil War. But, yeah, while the whole damn movie is his (and Bruce's) fault, at least it seemed somewhat in character.

• Hulk

So last movie he was in control but now, not so much??? I totally get him being out of control when Scarlet Witch whammied him, but the rest felt really inconsistent. But I will say, Im glad he left at the end. Hulk is just not a team player, at least never for the long haul. It is just NOT who he is as a character... save for those few years in the 90s where he had Banner's mind and personality intact. There is a reason why Hulk only lasted a handful of issues back when The Avengers were created. I have no doubt they will bring him back for Infinity War, but I really like the prospect of a Hulkless onscreen Avengers.

• Hawkeye

Oh crap, we really didn't get to do much with him in Thor or the Avengers so let's shove a shit ton of completely off the wall and nowhere near comic canon civilian back history down your throats. Who is this Hawkeye? He certainly doesn't remind me of the comic book (616 or Ultimate) character he's based on. In fact, the only real similarities I see are a bow and arrow and a penchant for liking the colors black and purple. Yeah, Hawkeye had a wife in the comics, but she was not a farming housewife... she was fucking Mockingbird, y'know, the one that is currently starring on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with her ex-husband and far-more-suitable-and-all-around-better-Hawkeye Hunter. I do not get this at all. And I am not even going to get into the whole Jeremy Renner issue...

• Captain America and Thor

I really didn't have any issues here, save for Thor's general lack of screen time. The flashback of Peggy was even more heartbreaking to me considering I JUST rewatched Captain America: The First Avenger this morning, and mentioned Steve and Peggy never getting that date. :( I can't be alone in thinking that Steve really could lift Mjolnir, but just chose to fake that he couldn't?

• Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch

Little known fact about me: these two have always been two of my favorite Marvel characters. I love how they connect the X-men and Avengers universes. And back when I was collecting comics religiously, Wanda was on the Avengers roster and Pietro on X-Factor's. Sadly, they can't mention their lineage or the fact that they are mutants, but I'll take it. And hey, in one version they are even canonically incestuous!

Firstly, THANK YOU FOR GIVING THEM ACCENTS! Almost every appearance by them in cartoons or movies tend to make them American. THEY AREN'T! They are Eastern European and I am thrilled that they kept this in the movie.

Secondly, I loved how they started out as villains. It was a nice homage to their comic book history.

I loved Wanda. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED. I adored how they never really fully committed to what her powers are in the movie. Yeah, they mention a laundry list of psychic abilities, but for the most part they left it up in the air. Which works perfectly for a character that when asked what her powers are ends up being: "Um, she can alter reality and probability via hexy wexy magicky... I DUNNO SHE CAN DO SHIT! with a side of witchcraft." I've heard rumblings about them basically making her The Avengers' Jean Grey, which, while most fanboys complain about it, it really makes complete sense. Jean (kinda sorta) evolved to become Dark Phoenix and Wanda eventually went mad and House of M'd and "No More Mutants" shitstormed, so I don't see the problem. Both could arguably be counted as some of the most powerful characters in the entire Marvel library. I was really pleased with her here.

(NEXT PART REALLY CONTAINS SPOILERS SO...)

I also really loved Pietro. SOOOO MUCH BETTER than Fox's "Peter Maximoff." They retained his cocky attitude and his protectiveness for Wanda... and let's face it, Aaron and his outfit are soooo much better and hotter than Evan Peter's disco silver suit with goggles.

BUT THEN THEY KILLED HIM! >:| I get that Aaron didn't want to be roped into a long term contract with Marvel, but them killing him made no sense to me for two reasons...

1) His death lacked the emotional punch that Coulson's temporary death had I n the first movie. While never a major player, Phil was a fan favorite spread over a few films, so there was an emotional connection to the character. But with Quicksilver, we didn't know him well enough to get attached, and the only real sorrow we feel is through that of Wanda losing her twin. And even that was gone faster than Pietro doing a jigsaw puzzle.

2) They are making no secret that they are building up to The Inhumans, hell the characters are popping up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. now! If there is any one non Inhuman character that is directly connected to the Inhumans, it is Pietro. THE MAN WAS MARRIED TO ONE AND HAS A DAUGHTER THAT IS HALF INHUMAN. This just screams of missed opportunities to me.

Back to that 'yeah, we didn't like that decision so we are choosing to ignore it,' thing...

• The Vision

I actually really liked the take on the character. My only real gripes are the lack of his powers of intangibility, density, matter manipulation, etc. Maybe that will change in the future? IDK. Also, they should have given him eyeless contacts... his eyes were disturbing to me.

• Nick Fury and Maria Hill

So is he or isn't he back? How long are they going to just tiptoe around Nick Fury's role? He is the director but not the director? SO CONFUSING! It is clear that Coulson and Hill are still following his direction, even though Coulson is now the kind of? director (I haven't watched S.H.I.E.L.D. the last two weeks or so yet) and Hill works for Tony. FIGURE IT OUT! I did really like how Maria was fairly prominent in this movie and I do like that she still connects to the TV show.

OFF TOPIC: I know that there was a lot of damage to Avengers/Stark Tower in the movie, but why did they move to new compound (what about the mansion???) I mean, I know Ultron fried their systems, but it isn't like Tony couldn't just get new stuff. Whatever...

• Last but not least, ULTRON

Okay, I liked Ultron, I did. And I liked James Spader too, but was I the only one that felt that the character seemed to be left wanting? (retyped that sentence five times, so you will have to deal with the grammar clumsiness.) In the trailers he DOMINATED and was made to feel truly terrifying, but in the movie itself he... lacked gravitas. I get that he took on some of Stark's personality traits (instead of Hank Pym's like in the comics) but he kind of felt... almost laughable at times? IDK to me, Ultron would be cold, calculating, and completely humorless. So this felt way out of character for a genocidal artificial intelligence to me.

Another thing that bothered me about him and his storyline was that it felt like we were being told and not shown. Being in fandom and reading fanfics, this is always a known storytelling faux pas. Yeah, we saw the first battle in Avengers Tower and the destruction of South Africa (though that more so focused on Hulk vs Iron Man,) but outside of the characters telling us that shit was going down, we were never really shown the impact Ultron was having on the world until the end. And outside of them saying that he was creating an extinction wide event, it never really felt that way... even when he lifted Sokovia into the sky. AGAIN, missed opportunities.

I hope they tone done the humor in the next two Avengers films. The first one had really great moments of levity, Hulk vs Loki and Hulk punching Thor in particular. But this one felt like they were trying too hard to get more of those type of moments. LESS IS MORE!

Really liked the inclusion of Falcon and War Machine and mention of the search for Bucky.

I think that Joss lost his way with this one a bit, but it sounds like there may have been some butting heads with Marvel, so I don't know. Like I said, overall, I enjoyed the movie... but being a comics guy, I tend to nitpick that which I love, so.

My overall Marvel Cinematic Verse list goes as such:

1) Captain America: The Winter Soldier
2) The Avengers
3) Thor
4) Iron Man
5) Captain America: The First Avenger (recent rewatch bumped this up)
6) Thor: The Dark World
7) Guardians of the Galaxy
8) The Avengers: Age of Ultron
9) Iron Man 3
10) The Incredible Hulk
11) Iron Man 2
TBD) Ant-Man
TBD) Captain America: Civil War
TBD) Thor: Ragnarok
TBD) Dr Strange
TBD) Black Panther
TBD) Captain Marvel
TBD) Guardians of the Galaxy 2
TBD) The Avengers: Infinity War: Part I
TBD) The Avengers: Infinity War: Part II
TBD) Inhumans
TBD) Spider-man (still not sure how well this will be connected outside of him being in Civil War)

Not really ranking them in with the movies, but Daredevil is my favorite TV entry, followed by Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D., then Agent Carter.

WOW, did not really think I had that much to say on the matter. APOLOGIES!

Now on to greener pastures...

I have been trying to dive back into my arting, and what better way to do that than to dive right off the high dive? I decided to put up some chibi offers on fandomaid, so I have a total of nine of those coming (well one is done now.) This kind of excites me, because I am stepping completely out of my SPN/J2/Teen Wolf sandbox and including things like Star Wars and some more Marvel stuff. YAY! Someone at work hired me to draw a picture of her daughter as Alice at the tea party, so that will be my next immediate project. Not sure if I will be posting that online, but there's that.

BUT NOW FOR THE REALLY EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT!

Big Bang season is upon us! I was wavering on whether to do it this year or not, mostly because of work/ those commissions/ and the overall darkness in the prompts this year... Seriously, how is it there is an overall unspoken theme each year??? Mpreg, Knotting, Dragons, etc. ANYWAY... I had a list selected but wasn't going to claim until I noticed that my top choice was still available after the initial floodgates opened. At that point I HAD TO HAVE IT! and man did I luck out on my choice!

Title: Refracted
Pairing: Jared/Jensen
Rating: NC-17

Jared knows exactly what he needs to do: earn a 4.0 grade point average, lead the basketball team to the state championship, nab a spot on the Homecoming Court, and be the best son two Catholic parents could ask for. He should know, this sort of stuff has been his life for the last 17 years, but this is when everything changes.

Befriending Jensen Ackles, who everyone knows of but doesn’t really know, opens Jared’s eyes to an array of possibilities he’d never considered. With Jensen in his life, Jared finds the courage to be his own person, recognize his real feelings, and make his own decisions when it comes to school, friends, and love.

Featuring Homecoming, a voyeuristic shower scene when Jared watches Jensen in the HS locker room (not meant to be stalkery, but about Jared’s realization), moments around a bonfire on farmland at night, counseling sessions, a guilt-ridden confessional, basketball games, Jared and Jensen in the HS art studio, and a schmoopy prom scene.

Warnings: Religious guilt, struggles with homosexuality/coming out, judgement of and bashing of homosexuals

Those of you that have known me for a really long time know that I have a fondness for High School AUs, but you take that and intertwine it with religion and I AM ALL OVER IT! I've never been all that religious myself, but growing up Mormon, I saw the impact religion has on gay youth. And for some reason I've always been intrigued by Catholicism, so THIS HAD TO BE MINE!

And the best part??? I get the great pleasure of working with [livejournal.com profile] dugindeep once again! We got to play together in [livejournal.com profile] j2_everafter a while back and now we get to do it again! SERIOUSLY, I LOVE THIS WOMAN! I had absolutely no clue it was her fic, but now I am feeling remarkably blessed that I picked this fic!

I have to echo a lot of your AoU comments. It was too much crammed into the time they gave it. I wish they had spent less time on Hulk trashing the city after the Scarlet Witch messed with his head. The romance between him and Nat just came out of nowhere. I adored her in the Winter Soldier and hope that's the version of Nat that shows up in the next Captain America movie. I left the movie really feeling like I did at the end of The Empire Strikes Back...it all felt unfinished. At least with this one, we know there's a sequel in the making.

I haven't read comics since I read my brother's Daredevil comics in the mid 80s. Does the TV Daredevil feel like the book character? It would be nice to have something to watch over the summer.

I really felt like this was almost more of a slapped together character study... it almost seemed like they didn't really even need Ultron in it. OH WELL!

TBH I haven't read a whole lot of Daredevil comics, most of my knowledge comes from the few crossover issues I have with him and from my cousin who is a huge fan of his. BUT I will say that the tone of the series definitely fits the tone of the character, which was something the movie version never got quite right. It is down dirty and gritty street level, which is what it should be. I definitely recommend it!
